Heliotrope Ridge

Miles: 5.5 miles roundtrip

Elevation: 1,400 feet gained

Mount Baker Highway 542

After crossing Grouse Creek on a footbridge the trail enters a dense forest and begins to steadily climb. As the trees thin out and just before the tree line you will find the old spot where Kulshan Cabin once stood. Now on the open side of the ridge you soon find a junction with the Mount Baker summit climbing route at about 2 miles. Stay left and eventually run into a stream that is most difficult to cross. Now just beyond this you have reached the viewpoint of Coleman Glacier.

  • Get there: Going east on Mount Baker Highway (542), turn right onto Forest Service Road 39, also called Glacier Creek Road. At about eight miles, the trailhead parking lot is on the left. There is a restroom.
