Scott Paul Trail

Baker Lake Area

Miles: 8 roundtrip

Elevation: 2,000 feet gained

Originally called the Sulfur Moraine Trail, used mostly by climbers looking to summit Mount Baker, it was rebuilt to become a loop using the Park Butte Trail. Start towards Park Butte and turn right onto your well marked trail just 100 feet in. A gentle, forested climb takes you to a viewpoint in two miles, seeing Mount Shuksan. After passing old rock slides and meadows, you now see Mount Baker and then finally crossing Rocky Creek on a seasonally placed suspension bridge. Just beyond here, you rejoin Park Butte Trail and either turn right to the lookout or left towards your car. Crossing Rocky Creek again on the way down, this time with no bridge, can be a bit tricky based on the flow.

  • Get there: Take Highway 20 east from I-5 passing through Sedro-Woolley to the Baker Lake Highway just beyond milepost 82. Turn left after about 14 miles onto FS rd 12 and turn right onto FS rd 13, about 3.5 miles up. The trailhead is just over five miles at the end of this road. There are an abundance of parking and bathrooms.
